Singapore Travel FAQ

⚖️ LEGAL RED ZONES

🇸🇬 Singapore -- Know the Law Before You Land

MEDIUM LEGAL RISK

Singapore is exceptionally safe but has unusually strict enforcement of minor infractions. Fines are very large. Drug laws carry the death penalty.

🌿
Drugs (Any Amount) DEATH PENALTY

Singapore has mandatory death penalty for trafficking: 15g+ heroin, 30g+ cocaine, 500g+ cannabis. Possession of smaller amounts: up to 10 years + caning. No exceptions for medical cannabis from other countries. Singapore does not recognize foreign medical marijuana prescriptions.

🍬
Chewing Gum FINE

Sale and import of chewing gum is banned (medical/dental gum with prescription is exempt). Bringing gum into Singapore for personal use can result in a fine up to SGD 1,000 (~$740). Chewing gum in public: up to SGD 2,000. This is genuinely enforced.

🚬
Smoking in Prohibited Areas FINE

Singapore has some of the strictest anti-smoking laws in Asia. Prohibited: all air-conditioned venues, all bus stops, parks, reservoirs, sports facilities, bridges, 5m radius of any building entrance. Fine: SGD 200 (~$150) on the spot, up to SGD 1,000 for repeated offenses. Designated smoking corners exist but are limited.

🦟
Mosquito Breeding (Standing Water) FINE

The National Environment Agency actively inspects for standing water. Found in your accommodation: up to SGD 5,000 fine for the occupant. Report any standing water issues to NEA immediately.

🗑️
Littering FINE

First offense: SGD 300 (~$220). Repeat offenders: Corrective Work Order -- cleaning public areas in a reflective vest for up to 12 hours (photographed by media). Spitting: SGD 1,000. Feeding pigeons: SGD 500.

🚽
Not Flushing Public Toilets FINE

Failing to flush a public toilet: SGD 150 (~$110). Public restrooms have attendants who report violations. This is actively enforced.

🍟
Eating/Drinking on MRT (Subway) FINE

SGD 500 (~$370) fine. This includes all food, drinks, and chewing gum. Water is technically prohibited too. No exceptions.

🔌
Jaywalking FINE

Crossing within 50m of a pedestrian crossing: up to SGD 1,000 or 3 months imprisonment. First offense typically SGD 20-50 on-the-spot fine. Enforcement is regular in CBD areas.

💡 Insider Legal Tip

Singapore's laws are strict but transparent and consistently applied. The easiest strategy: don't bring gum, don't eat on the MRT, don't smoke outside designated areas. The city is very clearly signposted about what is and isn't allowed.
