Near the east and west gates of the Taj Mahal in Agra, men in business clothes or uniforms claim the monument is "closed for a VIP visit" or "government maintenance." They redirect tourists to a nearby "government tourist office" where they sell overpriced tours, fake permits, or alternative sites. The Taj Mahal is almost never closed.

Walk directly to the official ticket counter at the South Gate (main), East Gate, or West Gate. The Taj Mahal is open every day except Friday, from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Check the official website (tajmahal.gov.in) for any closures. Near New Delhi Railway Station and Paharganj, offices display "India Tourism" or "Government of India Tourist Information" signage with official-looking logos. Staff speak good English and offer help with train tickets, tours, and accommodation. They sell overpriced packages, fake train reservations, and non-existent tours. Some charge ₹3,000-15,000 for services available free online.

✗"Government tourist office" that you were directed to by a taxi or auto
✗Request to pay in cash for train tickets
✗"Your train is cancelled -- I can rebook" from strangers

Real India Tourism offices are listed at incredibleindia.org. Book trains exclusively through IRCTC.co.in or at the Foreign Tourist Quota counter inside the station (upstairs, Platform 1 side). Offices with "Government" in the name on shop fronts are almost always fake. When in doubt, call IRCTC: 139.

The Gem Investment Scheme

? How It Works

A "chance encounter" with friendly locals leads to an invitation for chai. The conversation eventually turns to gems -- they claim to work for a government gem export scheme where you can buy sapphires, rubies, or diamonds at wholesale prices and resell at home for 200-300% profit. They show you official-looking certificates. The gems are synthetic or massively overvalued. The "profit" never materializes.

✗Unsolicited friendship near major monuments
✗"I work for the government export board"
✗Certificates of "authentic" gemstones with official-looking stamps
✗"Just look, no obligation to buy"

No government export scheme works this way. No tourist has ever profited from this scheme. Decline all gem discussions from strangers. If you want gems, buy from certified GIA-rated jewelers with paper receipts and return policies. Pay by credit card only. If you've been defrauded, a credit card chargeback is the primary recourse.

Jaipur is Rajasthan's tourist center and has a sophisticated scam ecosystem around its craft industries. The gems, textiles, and carpets are genuinely world-class -- but require care in purchasing.

India has specific restrictions on drones, satellite phones, and photography at sensitive sites. Religious sentiment offenses are taken seriously.

Satellite phones are illegal in India for tourists without a licence from Department of Telecommunications. Carrying a sat phone can result in arrest under Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act. If you need emergency communication in remote areas, register a local SIM with roaming instead.

Photography prohibited at: all railway stations (some), military installations, border areas, government offices, and some temples. Signs are not always present. When in doubt, ask. Photography of tribal communities requires permission.
