UAE has some of the strictest laws for tourists in the world. What is legal in your home country can mean imprisonment here.
Alcohol is served in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants -- but drinking in public, on beaches, or in non-licensed venues is illegal. Being drunk in public: up to 1 month imprisonment. You cannot bring alcohol from Dubai Duty Free and drink it outside. During Ramadan: stricter enforcement.
Unmarried couples sharing a hotel room is technically illegal. Enforcement is inconsistent for tourists but has been used. Adultery: up to 1 year imprisonment. Pregnancy outside marriage can trigger investigation. Book separate rooms if unmarried.
Homosexuality is illegal in the UAE. Up to 10 years imprisonment plus deportation. Physical affection between same-sex couples in public has led to arrests. This applies to all nationalities.
Many common medications are controlled substances in UAE: codeine, tramadol, some antidepressants, ADHD medications (Adderall, Ritalin), some sleeping pills. Carry original prescription, doctor's letter in English, and do NOT exceed 30-day supply without Ministry of Health approval. People have been arrested at Dubai Airport for medication in their luggage.
Photographing government buildings, palaces, military installations, and airports is prohibited. Also: photographing people without consent, especially women, can result in arrest. Drone use requires GCAA permit -- unauthorized drones are confiscated and operators fined/arrested.
Swearing (including in WhatsApp messages), making rude gestures, or insulting someone online can result in immediate arrest under Cybercrime law. People have been deported for Facebook posts made before arriving in the UAE. Audit your social media before entering.
Pork is available in licensed stores and hotel restaurants but importing it is restricted. Not a criminal offense but items will be confiscated at customs.
Materials deemed critical of Islam, the UAE government, or its rulers can be confiscated and result in arrest. This includes certain books, pamphlets, and downloaded content on your devices.

The "debt trap": some tourists discover they have an outstanding UAE traffic fine or bounced cheque from a previous visit and are detained at the airport on arrival. Check for outstanding fines at Dubai Police website (dubaipolice.gov.ae) before flying.
