India Travel FAQ

Deep Scam Analysis

How each scam works, exactly -- and how to beat it

🕌
#1 Most Reported Scam at Any Indian Monument

The Taj Mahal "Closed" Scam

? How It Works

Near the east and west gates of the Taj Mahal in Agra, men in business clothes or uniforms claim the monument is "closed for a VIP visit" or "government maintenance." They redirect tourists to a nearby "government tourist office" where they sell overpriced tours, fake permits, or alternative sites. The Taj Mahal is almost never closed.

! Red Flags

  • "Taj closed today -- I am government guide"
  • Anyone approaching before you reach the ticket counter
  • "Special permit" required for your passport nationality
  • Offer to show you a "better view" from a rooftop shop

Exact Prevention

Walk directly to the official ticket counter at the South Gate (main), East Gate, or West Gate. The Taj Mahal is open every day except Friday, from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Check the official website (tajmahal.gov.in) for any closures. Buy tickets only at the counter or online at asi.payumoney.com.

💸 Typical Cost: Tourists lose $50-500 in fake tours and commissions
📞 Legal: UP Tourism Police: 1800-180-0151 (free). File complaints at the tourism police booth at the South Gate.
🏢
#1 Most Common Fraud Near Indian Train Stations

Delhi Fake Tourist Office

? How It Works

Near New Delhi Railway Station and Paharganj, offices display "India Tourism" or "Government of India Tourist Information" signage with official-looking logos. Staff speak good English and offer help with train tickets, tours, and accommodation. They sell overpriced packages, fake train reservations, and non-existent tours. Some charge ₹3,000-15,000 for services available free online.

! Red Flags

  • Office within 500m of New Delhi Railway Station
  • "Government tourist office" that you were directed to by a taxi or auto
  • Request to pay in cash for train tickets
  • "Your train is cancelled -- I can rebook" from strangers

Exact Prevention

Real India Tourism offices are listed at incredibleindia.org. Book trains exclusively through IRCTC.co.in or at the Foreign Tourist Quota counter inside the station (upstairs, Platform 1 side). Offices with "Government" in the name on shop fronts are almost always fake. When in doubt, call IRCTC: 139.

💸 Typical Cost: ₹2,000-15,000 ($25-180) for worthless services
📞 Legal: Delhi Tourist Helpline: 1800-11-0007. Railway fraud: GRP (Railway Police): 1512.
💎
Highest Average Loss Scam in India

The Gem Investment Scheme

? How It Works

A "chance encounter" with friendly locals leads to an invitation for chai. The conversation eventually turns to gems -- they claim to work for a government gem export scheme where you can buy sapphires, rubies, or diamonds at wholesale prices and resell at home for 200-300% profit. They show you official-looking certificates. The gems are synthetic or massively overvalued. The "profit" never materializes.

! Red Flags

  • Unsolicited friendship near major monuments
  • "I work for the government export board"
  • Certificates of "authentic" gemstones with official-looking stamps
  • "Just look, no obligation to buy"

Exact Prevention

No government export scheme works this way. No tourist has ever profited from this scheme. Decline all gem discussions from strangers. If you want gems, buy from certified GIA-rated jewelers with paper receipts and return policies. Pay by credit card only. If you've been defrauded, a credit card chargeback is the primary recourse.

💸 Typical Cost: $500-10,000+ in worthless or overvalued stones
📞 Legal: Gemstone fraud: report to National Consumer Helpline: 1800-11-4000. Jaipur gems fraud: Rajasthan Police: 100.

City-by-City Safety Guide

Know before you land -- each city has a different risk profile

🏛️

Delhi

The highest-scam city in India for tourists, primarily around the railway station and Connaught Place. Situational awareness matters more here than anywhere else in India. The metro is your safest and cheapest transport option.

🔴 Scam Hotspots
  • New Delhi Railway Station vicinity (fake tourist offices)
  • Connaught Place (commission touts for shops)
  • Paharganj (touts and overpriced "backpacker" services)
  • Karol Bagh market (gem and jewelry scams)
🟢 Safer Areas

Hauz Khas Village has honest cafes and galleries. Khan Market for reliable branded goods at fair prices. South Delhi malls for zero haggling.

🕌

Agra

Agra exists primarily for the Taj Mahal. Most tourist interactions involve some form of commission scheme. The golden rule: walk directly to the ticket counter, speak to no one who approaches you first.

🔴 Scam Hotspots
  • Taj Mahal south gate approach (closed scam)
  • "Marble inlay" workshops with Taj Mahal view (massively inflated)
  • Agra Fort area (unofficial "guides")
  • Fatehpur Sikri road (overpriced refreshments at "rest stops")
🟢 Safer Areas

Sadar Bazaar for local goods at negotiable but honest prices. Dasaprakash restaurant (near Taj area) has transparent tourist-friendly pricing and good food.

🏰

Jaipur

Jaipur is Rajasthan's tourist center and has a sophisticated scam ecosystem around its craft industries. The gems, textiles, and carpets are genuinely world-class -- but require care in purchasing.

🔴 Scam Hotspots
  • Hawa Mahal area (overpriced block-print near tourist crowds)
  • "Government emporium" shops that are actually private (look for actual Rajasthan Govt sign)
  • Gem shops near City Palace (lab stones sold as natural)
  • Amber Fort auto-rickshaw drivers (commission to specific shops)
🟢 Safer Areas

The actual Rajasthan Government Emporium (Rajasthali) on MI Road has fixed, fair prices. Johari Bazaar for genuine jewelry at negotiable market rates.

🎯

The Insider Perspective

"India's scam landscape is unique in that the country's genuine craft products -- gems, textiles, spices, ayurvedic goods -- are often worth buying. The scam is not the product itself but the inflated price, the middleman commission, and the artificial urgency. The single most effective defense: never buy from anyone you were directed to by a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or "friendly stranger." Walk in independently."

⚖️ LEGAL RED ZONES

🇮🇳 India -- Know the Law Before You Land

MEDIUM LEGAL RISK

India has specific restrictions on drones, satellite phones, and photography at sensitive sites. Religious sentiment offenses are taken seriously.

🚁
Drones Without DGCA Permit CONFISCATION + FINE

All drones require registration with DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and a UAS Remote Pilot Certificate. No-fly zones include all of Delhi, within 5km of airports, military areas, and borders. Tourist drones are frequently confiscated. Apply at digitalsky.dgca.gov.in. Process takes 2-4 weeks.

📡
Satellite Phones ARREST

Satellite phones are illegal in India for tourists without a licence from Department of Telecommunications. Carrying a sat phone can result in arrest under Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act. If you need emergency communication in remote areas, register a local SIM with roaming instead.

📸
Photography at Military/Government Sites ARREST

Photography prohibited at: all railway stations (some), military installations, border areas, government offices, and some temples. Signs are not always present. When in doubt, ask. Photography of tribal communities requires permission.

🐄
Beef in Certain States ARREST

Cow slaughter and beef are banned in most Indian states including Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Penalties range from 7-14 years imprisonment. Beef is legal in Kerala, West Bengal, and some NE states. Do not bring beef products into these states.

💡 Insider Legal Tip

India's "dry states" are a common trap: Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland ban alcohol entirely. Carrying alcohol into these states from elsewhere in India can result in arrest. Check your transit route if flying domestically.
