Medication warning: Adderall and stimulants remain strictly illegal in Japan

ADHD medications including Adderall, Vyvanse, and Ritalin are classified as controlled substances in Japan and are illegal to bring — even with a prescription.

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood rules for Western tourists. Penalties range from confiscation to detention and deportation. Some visitors have been detained for days. Approved medications: Up to 1 month supply of your home country prescription for approved medications. Bring original packaging, English prescription, and if possible a letter from your doctor. Common OTC medicines in the US/UK that are banned in Japan include: Pseudoephedrine-based cold medicines (NyQuil, Sudafed), some sleep aids, certain antihistamines.
