More Japanese regions launch accommodation taxes in June 2026
Nagano Prefecture (plus Matsumoto, Karuizawa, Achi and Hakuba), along with Kumamoto City and Miyazaki City, began charging new per-night lodging taxes on hotel and ryokan stays starting June 2026.
These join Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and a growing list of Japanese destinations that now levy a small accommodation tax, typically ¥100–500 per person per night for standard hotels, rising sharply for luxury properties (Kyoto's top tier reaches ¥10,000/night). The tax is charged at check-in, separate from your booking price, and applies equally to Japanese and foreign guests — it is not a tourist surcharge. Budget travelers should budget a modest amount for check-in fees on top of quoted room rates, especially for longer, multi-city itineraries.
