Japan eVisa system launched for 30+ new nationalities (Sep 2025)

The eVisa system now covers tourist, business, and transit visas. Application at evisa.mofa.go.jp takes 5-7 business days. Approval rate is high for standard tourism purposes. Countries still requiring in-person embassy visits include some in Africa and specific regions. The 90-day visa-free arrangement for 72+ countries remains unchanged. By 2028, Japan plans to implement JESTA (electronic travel authorization) for all visa-free visitors.
