New QR code payment scam targeting tourists in Bangkok markets

Scammers are replacing legitimate merchant QR codes with their own at restaurants and markets in Bangkok tourist areas. Tourists pay but merchants never receive the money.

Reports increased from October 2025 through early 2026. Most common in Chatuchak Market, Khao San Road street stalls, and smaller restaurants in tourist areas. The scammer either replaces the physical QR code display or shows a fake QR code on their phone. When you scan and pay, the money goes to the scammer's account. Prevention: Always verify the merchant name on the payment confirmation screen before confirming. It should match the establishment. For amounts over 500 THB, use cash. Report incidents to Tourist Police: 1155.
